Wall Hanging / Quilt Block

A = 3 1/2" x 5 1/2"
 B = 3 1/2" x 2  3/4"
C = 2 3/4" x 2 3/4"
D = 1 1/2" x 1 1/2"
 E =  1 1/2" x 5 1/2"

NOTE:   A 1/4" seam allowance is used throughout the patchwork piece.

PATCH: For each heart, cut out one (A) and one (B) from dark fabric, one (C) and four (D) from light fabric. -- With right sides together, lay piece (D) over the corner of (A) and stitch as shown. Repeat for the other corner of (A).

--With right sides together, lay piece (D) over the corner of (B) and stitch as shown. Repeat for the other corner of (B).

-- For pieces (A) and (B), fold each square (D) along the stitching line and press flat.

-- With right sides together, lay piece (C) over piece (B) and stitch as shown. Open the piece up and press the seam toward (C).

-- With right sides together, lay piece (B+C) over piece (A) and stitch as shown. Press the seam toward piece (A).

TA-DA! The first patch is made. Now make three more!

JOINING PATCHES: -- Cut twelve (E) pieces of light fabric and 9 (D) pieces of dark fabric.

-- Lay them out according to the following pattern:

-- Sew Row 1 together, press seams toward the (E) pieces. -- Sew Row 2 together, press seams toward the (E) pieces. -- Sew Row 3, as in Row 1 -- Sew Row 4, as in Row 2 -- Sew Row 5, as in Row 1 JOINING ROWS: -- With right sides together and matching the seam lines: -- Stitch Row 1 to Row 2, press the seam allowance toward Row 1. -- Stitch Row 2 to Row 3. press the seam allowance toward Row 3. -- Stitch Row 3 to Row 4, press the seam allowance toward Row 3. -- Stitch Row 4 to Row 5, press the seam allowance toward Row 5.

BORDER: -- Cut two strips of fabric 1 1/2" wide and 45" long. This includes extra fabric for the hanger casing. -- Cut the strip to measure slightly longer than the side of the patchwork piece.

-- With right sides together, align the edge of the strip with the side of the worked piece and stitch as shown. Trim off the excess length of the border strip. Repeat for the opposite side of the piece. Press the seam allowance toward the border strip.

-- Align the top edge of the piece with a border strip. Stitch as shown, then trim off the excess strip length. Repeat for the bottom edge, then press the seam allowances toward the border strip.

LAYERS: Cut a piece of batting or fleece and a piece of fabric backing the same size as the finished patchwork piece.

ASSEMBLY OF LAYERS: -- Make a stack of the three layers by placing the batting on the bottom, next the backing (right side facing up), and then the patchwork piece (right side facing down).

-- Stitch the layers together, leaving a 6" opening along one side for turning the piece.

-- Trim off the excess seam allowance at the corners.

-- Turn the piece right-side-out.

-- Hand stitch the opening closed.

-- Either quilt, topstitch, or tie the layers together.

CASING: -- Using the remainder of the 1 1/2" border strip, cut a piece of it as long as the top edge of the finished piece. -- Press 1/4" on each long side to the back side of the strip. -- Press back 1/4" on each end of the strip.

-- Place the strip, right side facing out, along the top edge of the finished piece and hand stitch into place on three sides, leaving a short end open.

-- Cut a wooden dowel 1/4" shorter than the casing and insert it into the casing. -- Stitch the casing end closed. -- Using a sturdy thread or cord, stitch a hanger onto the casing.
